The Walk Home After School
Every afternoon at The Ark Trust tells a story.
School bags swing from tired shoulders. Shoes drag across the compound after a long day. Younger children rush ahead excitedly while older ones pretend not to be as eager to talk.
And waiting for them is Lucy , lovingly known within the home as Mama Nyachira.
On this particular afternoon, she welcomed every child as they returned from school. The younger ones received warm hugs while the older children immediately began sharing stories from their day.
One child complained about a torn school bag.
Another excitedly recounted something that happened in class.
Several voices overlapped as everyone tried to speak at once.
But what made the moment special was not simply the welcome.
It was what happened afterward.
Mama Nyachira walked with the children to their dormitories, listening as they talked, laughed, complained, and shared the small details of their day.
